Otago Rally 2013 (pt. 1)

The rally cars come to Dunedin!

First, we went to see the cars:

Certainly there are the blast-fast cars...

...complete with drivers signing autographs.

But most of the rides are labors of love.  They call auto body places here "panelbeaters," and there was a whole lot of panelbeating going on:

#17 - the brown-paper-wrapping Ford Fiesta.

At first I thought this was the ugliest car in the race - too new/too plain to be cool.  But upon further inspection, I think it might be a wolf in sheep's clothing - special wheels, elaborate roll cage, and some sneaky looking stuff under the hood.  Hey, it's in the elite division.

#26c - Ford Escort RS1800.

Handsome and classic.  Plus the body is in great shape.  I'm guessing there are a lot of old Ford Escort parts available.

#24 - Datsun PA10

Will-J's favorite car (see above).  A handsome ride, and loving the red, white, and blue.

17c - Ford Capri

This one gets two pictures - really great car, and really great color.  Big V8.  PLUS, the driver has his 12-year-old daughter as navigator.  Quote: "I love the noise and the g-forces."

33c - Fiat Abarth 131

This is basically what a rally car should look like...

36c - Datsun Sunny

...not this...

...but this.

41c - Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6

One of two Alfa's in the race, and from Oz.

23c - VW Golf GTI

I thought this was a rabbit at first, which would have been even better.  Is painting the checkered flag on your car like getting a tattoo of the Larry O'Brien Trophy?  I'll say no.

38c - Toyota Sprinter

There would have been a lot of ways to dress up this car, but straight purple was not one.  Why didn't I get a picture of the red and black car next door - possible AMC?

Tomorrow we'll try to catch some of the race.
